"They Shall Not Pass Our Mountain Pass!"

There are days when one must simply shout:  "Glorious Second Edition Warhammer!!"

Ahh, Second Edition Warhammer, I rarely ever play it and seldom even look at it, but when I do, I love it!   No other edition even comes close to touching the artwork of wonderful Second!  (I had to resist the temptation of typing the preceding sentence boldly in Bold Print.)    The picture below being a perfect example.  I must have spent the better part of the morning staring at it and dreaming.

This mutated into an afterschool game...

"Brothers, They Shall Not Pass Our Mountain Pass!"

"Goblins!!  They're everywhere!!!"

Dwarves are falling!

But Dwarves fight on!

and on...

and on, against overwhelming and impossible odds...

"But They Shall Not Pass Our Mountain Pass!!"

"Unless, alas...

...they come en masse!"

"O Good Grungni, what a day to be a Dwarf!"

    1. Very well said, Mr. ALMan! I see that you have made Lord Asgard smile, and perhaps even have earned yourself an invitation to becoming an honourary member of the Squat Liberation Army!

    2. I advertised your post on Facebook and Tony Ackland himself commented :
"Obviously one of mine but I don't recall doing it. Certainly one of those where there wasn't a lot of time available, which was pretty well par for the course back then."

    3. Well, that's pretty cool - I really like Tony Ackland's artwork! Now, perhaps, Mr. ALMan, you might be next able to invite Mr. Rick Priestley over here sometime...

  2. I love that piece of artwork too!!! (and all of the artwork in 2nd Edition). It was that piece of art which inspired me to focus on collecting my Fantasy Tribes Great Goblins/Gnoll and the Fantasy Tribes Dwarves to oppose them.

Second edition is my favourite. The artwork is evocative, and the rules are simple and easy. You have gamed a battle which I have imagined playing for years. :)

    1. Hi Goblin Lee,

Such a treat looking through the 2nd ed. books, isn't it? And yes, one day I look forward to seeing your great Gnoll/Great Goblin collection in battle with the Fantasy Tribe Dwarves! I hope to do that too (in a much smaller fashion) sometime in the summer.

Thanks for popping by and commenting, Goblin Lee!

    1. Hi Ross,

Thanks, Ross Mac! Hey Ross, my son and I played our first game with your amazing 1812 guys on the weekend. I am sitting on the fence about whether and where to post some of the pics, mainly to post them to show off your beautiful work on the miniatures! Thanks again for them! I found a new cabinent for the 40mm collection and it pleases me every time I stop by it to admire them. And Ross, I have been really enjoying your Gathering of Hosts focus with your new Elastolin guys!

  5. Very Cool! I always enjoy reading your battle narratives and admiring your awe inspiring collection of classic minis. I like second edition too, but I don't think I've ever played it more than a handful of times. I wish GW had done supplements for third edition like they did for second...Lichemaster, Orc's Drift, MacDeath! Those were such fun ideas, but I guess they were too busy developing 40k by then.
